What do you get when two theatre actors, prove their passion for the stage by collaborating with South Africa’s biggest theatre producer? You get an establishment, with the vision of enhancing the talent we already possess in our country.
In April 2018, Anton Luitingh and Duane Alexander, launched in partnership with Pieter Toerien and Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town, the Luitingh Alexander Musical Theatre Academy (LAMTA), which will open its doors in January 2019.
Pieter Toerien does not need any introduction with his legendary contribution to theatre, and with his backing, this academy is set to be the leading training institution for the stage. Pieter Toerien is generously doing renovations to his beautiful Theatre on The Bay to accommodate the brand new Academy. LAMTA was created together with Pieter Toerien’s vision, blessing and endorsement. He is as passionate about seeing a new generation of triple threat talent being developed as Anton and Duane are.

LAMTA will also be offering modules on a number of important industry related subjects like theatre technology and arts administration. The beauty of studying in a living, breathing theatre is that the students will actively partake in the running of the theatre by taking up positions as front of house staff, ushers, follow spot operators, dressers, assistant stage managers etc.
Upon completion of their 3 years, student will receive a Graduation Certificate and a LAMTA Diploma in Performing Arts. The course is heavily practical-based and more important and beneficial to the students, who will receive physical preparations which will enable them to enter the industry and build successful careers for themselves. LAMTA is in the process of investigating accreditation through DHET and the Council on Higher Education to get the dense and detailed course on offer, recognized and approved. LAMTA is a full time tertiary education establishment so the idea is for students to apply after high school. Exceptions will be made under very special and certain circumstances to accept anyone younger.
In 2019, LAMTA will be taking in 25 students in their first year, and an additional 25 students as 2nd year students if they have already done a year or 2 of performance arts studies elsewhere.
