It was in June, 2006, during a live broadcast of Idols op kykNet, when the idea of www.stageandscreen.co.za was born, impulsively registered, and brought on-line. As lovers of Theatre, Live Shows and Events, and locally produced reality television that can compete with the international standards, a website like this seemed to be a great idea for freelance journalists, to do their part in supporting the Performing Arts in South Africa.
It was the dream of Louw Mulder to create a website, that would have the potential to one day be a one-stop information-station, where any news and information can be found about productions, their creators and their actors, making it happen all over theatres in Gauteng. These information would increase interest towards the theatre industry, boost attendance to theatre shows, and mostly, have the growth of the industry as an end-target in mind.
Louw Mulder, not employed full time in the media industry, started studied towards a BA Communication degree at the University of the Free State, and it was here where the love for journalism and writing started. Even though he changed his career path into the field of Human Resource Management, he never let go of his love for writing, and worked part-time as freelance journalist, covering mainly theatre productions and local live shows.
The team grew, and later, Mnet’s reality series Idols season 4 was the first Small Screen Production that was featured on Stage and Screen. A relationship between the MNet Channels and Stage and Screen, grew stronger, and Stage and Screen was soon trusted by this paid TV Giant with information of their reality series like Idols, Survivor and Masterchef, to mention only a few. This gave the Small Screen click on Stage and Screen, their first push.
It is now 2013, and we just conquer our first server and hosting upgrade, to prepare for our next endeavour. Not just would we like to be the one stop site for theatre and small screen productions, we would also like to do the same for movies and feature films, produced locally in South Africa. We are therefore currently working on obtaining what is necessary to start promoting upcoming movies on our site, just like we are currently doing with Theatre.
Also in our short term goal, is to get more involved as media with local and international Live shows and Music Events. It just makes sense… People like going to a good theatre show, or like to go see their favourite South African Artist performing life. Bigger than this, is to go see an International icon performing live on Stage, which would be appropriate to have its rightful place on Stage and Screen.
We can just say watch this space, as we continuously do our best, to improve this dream. It must be kept in mind though, that it is a hobby, and although we all would love to, we cannot spend our time full time to this cause… yet!!!
Please tell your friends about this site, and connect with us. We are on Facebook and Twitter, and your comments on the site will be very valuable.
Also, thank you very very much to all the Production houses, Publicists and PR companies and everyone, who believes in us, and is certainly playing a big roll in making this reality for us.
So for now, keep the theatres full, and enjoy what the talent in South Africa has to offer.
